Kyphosis, otherwise known as Hunchback is a defect of the bone whereby the spinal cord take an unusual curve in the upper back.

However, when "Hunchback" is mentioned in a traditional point of view, one may think something else.

In this article, I'll be explaining what Hunchback is, what people thought it was, as well as the causes, symptoms and treatments.

What people think it is/ from a traditional point of view;

Some tribes in Africa have superstitious definitions of the hunchback. Due to the lack of researching equipments in the olden days, some tribes believed Hunchback to be a form of GoodLuck to the community, some believe gold may be inside, while others consider it a taboo.

But obviously all these aren't the case. In the write up below, I'll be explaining what it actually is after a modern scientific research have been in place.

What it actually is/ scientific point of view;

As stated earlier, hunchback occurs when the spinal cord in the upper back get an excessive curvature. This leads to an abnormal hunch in ones back, thus the name hunchback.

People with hunchback get an obvious arch in their back, a rounded shoulder, and MAY experience pains or did difficulty in breathing.

Hunchback in elderly women is known as dowager’s hump.

Some Causes of Hunchback;

Hunchback can happen to anybody at any age, although it's rare in babies.

When you get Hunchback due to your poor posture, it's called postural kyphosis.

Otherwise, some causes of Hunchback may include; Aging (especially of you have a poor posture), muscle weakness, surgery complications, Scheuermann’s disease (which occurs in children), bone degeneration diseases, spinal cord injury, slipped discs, scoliosis, etc.

There are other causes of Hunchback but these are the most common

It's obvious that you seek treatment if you notice you are developing an hunchback. Remember it can happen to anyone at any age so always keep your postural health in check; the is, the way you walk, sit, and in general, your movement.

Here are some of the treatments for the disorder; Medications (only prescribed by a registered doctor), Physical therapy, Yoga, loosing excessive weight, wearing posture correction equipments, surgery (may be needed in severe cases).

These, however, are just the basic treatments. You may have to do more research depending on the cause of your hunch.

In conclusion;

For most people, hunchback doesn't cause serious pains or pose serious health problems, instead, what they suffer the most is lack of care, support and love from their friends and family. This defect can happen to anyone. Treat people nicely.

And if you don't have it, it's highly advisable that you keep a good posture as bad postures are the the leading causes of Hunchback.
